Building my New Kiln

Kiln Building Page 2

Though I have been making urns for this purpose for several years now, I have yet to make two alike. Every person is a unique individual. It seems appropriate that those same qualities be reflected in these urns. Of course, as with people, there are "familial similarities", and they all bear the stamp of my creation. Yet each piece is given individual attention. An attempt is made to develop each one's unique potential.

Design criteria for a Funeral Urn or Cremation Urn depend on the rituals that will be observed. An inset lid is used for the ease with which it can be sealed with wax or a more permanent adhesive. Some families choose to scatter the ashes at some point, and retain the urn as a memorial vase. For this possibility, the lid is fired separately, to allow the seat of the lid, or gallery, to be glazed as well. This permits the base to serve as a vase without the appearance of "incompleteness" that might be given by an unglazed gallery area.

Typically, volume of over 180 cubic inches (about three quarts) is considered sufficient for an adult's remains. When volume is greater than 300 cubic inches, the piece would be considered suitable for use as a "Companion Urn".

There is nothing about these urns that makes them exclusively appropriate for this use. Any use, from purely decorative display to kitchen canister, is within their scope.
